Archaeological Field Technicians and Mapping Technicians
TMHC Inc. is accepting resumes for multiple positions within our Archaeology program for Archaeological Field Technician and Archaeological Mapping Technician for the 2025 Field Season. Field Technicians will participate in a wide range of archaeological projects including field survey (test pitting, field walking), site testing, excavation, and documentation. This position will start in spring 2025.
Responsibilities
- Complete archaeological fieldwork following requirements of the current Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists issued by the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (MCM)
- Support Field Directors and provide assistance where needed
- Work in conjunction with local Indigenous and Descendant community representatives
Requirements
- Actively participate in archaeological fieldwork including survey, excavation, fieldwalking
- Perform physically demanding and repetitive tasks (e.g., hand shovelling, screening soil, moving buckets of dirt) lifting 20-40lbs
- Extensive outdoor work, requiring the ability to walk and stand on varied terrains for prolonged periods of time
- Take direction from Field Directors, Project Managers, and Principals of TMHC Inc.
- Willingness to engage in diverse projects across Ontario. This role may require travel and overnight stays for off-site assignments
- Flexibility and openness to new experiences are essential
- Experience in archaeology and archaeological field methods and ability to identify artifacts in the field is preferred, but not required
- Full G Class Driver’s licence in good standing is an asset but not required
- Obtaining and maintaining security clearances as required by TMHC clients
- Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude
- Strong attention to detail, with proven ability to follow specific instructions
Work Experience
- Diploma or degree (in progress or completed) in Anthropology or Archaeology is preferred but not required
- Previous fieldwork experience of any kind is an asset
Salary Range
- Begins at $22.50 and scales based on education and experience

- Supervise the completion of Stage 1-4 fieldwork following the 2011 Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists
- Carry out basic archaeological fieldwork tasks (test pitting, pedestrian survey, unit excavation, feature excavation and documentation)
- Maintain quality control of fieldwork and data
- Work with Indigenous and Descendant community representatives to develop and maintain respectful and professional relationships
- Supervise and mentor field crew
- Ensure adherence to health and safety policies and requirements
Requirements
- Valid Applied Research (R) Licence issued by the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (MCM).
- 2+ years' experience field directing in archaeology and archaeological field methods

Cultural Heritage Specialists
TMHC’s growing Cultural Heritage Division is accepting applications for Cultural Heritage Specialists at Intermediate and Senior levels. These full-time positions will be based in either London or Toronto, dependent on the location of the successful candidate(s).
Key Responsibilities – all levels:

- Participate in producing high quality reports and assessments that meet the needs of our various clients (municipal, provincial and private sector clients);
- Actively engage in team discussions related to conservation strategy and heritage evaluation;
- Conduct in-depth archival research to support a variety of projects;
- Perform site visits to document and observe current conditions of potential heritage properties;

- Supervise and mentor junior staff in the completion of project deliverables;
- Liaising with clients, stakeholders, Descendant communities, provincial ministries and municipal staff
- Coordinate site visits; and
- Preparing and tracking proposals, project budgets and progress.
Education & Experience:

- A graduate degree/diploma in heritage conservation, urban planning, or a related field or
- An undergraduate degree in heritage conservation, urban planning, or a related field;
- Previous experience in the heritage consulting (3+ years);
- Experience supervising and mentoring team members; and,
- CAHP membership (Intern or Professional)

- Excellent writing and communication skills;
- Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects at once while maintaining a high standard of work;
- Willingness to work independently as well as within a collaborative multidisciplinary team;
- Familiarity with addressing cultural heritage in a range of legislative contexts (Environmental Assessment Act, Planning Act, etc.);
- Familiarity with relevant policy frameworks such as the Ontario Heritage Act, the Ontario Heritage Toolkit, the Provincial Policy Statement (2020), and the Standards & Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada (2010);
- Familiarity with best practices in historical research, heritage evaluation, and conservation planning; and,
- Demonstrated interest in heritage conservation as a community-building practice.
